Minority Mental Health Awareness month

EDITORIAL

July marks Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to highlighting the unique mental health challenges faced by racial and ethnic minorities. While physical health often takes precedence, mental well-being is equally crucial. Historically, seeking mental health care carried a stigma within minority communities, compounded by the generational trauma of racial prejudice and oppression. This trauma profoundly impacts mental health, exacerbated by negative generalizations and systemic oppression. Minority Mental Health Awareness Month encourages us to recognize the signs of mental illness, distinguish between acute and chronic conditions, and support those at risk. Dive in to explore the significant impact of mental health issues on minority communities and learn how to make a difference.

Join us as we delve deeper into the implications of this act and its impact on your business operations.

Juneteenth NY 2024 Unveils 15th Annual Celebration in Brooklyn

IN THE NEWS

It’s too bad we didn’t have the internet back in 1865. The slaves in Texas would not have had to wait an additional 2 ½ years to be notified that they were free. We could have just sent a text, ‘ur free.’ Without such technology, the alternative was having General Gordon Granger, the commander of the military in the district of Texas, ride through town and inform the last of the slaves in America that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, was signed into law to end slavery in America. This proclamation was met with much resistance and has evolved over the years. For Black Americans, it was the beginning of their transformational journey to join mainstream America as equal citizens with equal protection under the laws.

Diversity, Equity And Inclusion - Is It Under Attack?

EDITORIAL

In 2020, as the world watched the 9-minute video of George Floyd, it was clear that racism is alive and well in America. The footage was upfront and personal. There could be no denying that a Black man was murdered over a $20 dispute. The video renewed the attention of corporate America and other institutions in this country. They vowed to become more inclusive and diverse and implemented several diversity and inclusion programs. As we fast forward to 2024, we find diversity programs regularly being challenged in courtrooms nationwide as discriminatory. To avoid legal challenges, diversity programs are being dismantled and/or watered down to the point that they become meaningless. In effect, lawsuits are being used to constrain public policy.

Beyond the Protests: The True Political Concerns of Today's College Students

EDITORIAL

In the wake of passionate protests reminiscent of the Vietnam War era, today's fervor centers on the Israel-Hamas conflict over Gaza. Balancing peace and alliances challenges the United States, historically a proponent of democracy and peace. With casualties rising, humanitarian aid becomes imperative amid youth activism spotlighting peacekeeping failures. Complex questions arise: Is Israel accountable for civilian casualties, or is Hamas culpable for using them as shields? International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan's call for arrest warrants for both sides underscores the crisis' severity. Civilians suffer shortages amid the conflict, amplifying calls for peace, particularly in college protests. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for navigating global peace efforts, urging readers to delve deeper into the article for insights.

CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: 5 STEPS TO BUILDING OF GENERATIONAL WEALTH

In the 19th century, news traveled slowly, taking over two years to reach the last enslaved African Americans about their freedom. Today, we must honor their legacy by acknowledging the resilience and perseverance that have brought us to this moment, ensuring we continue to fight for equality and justice. Juneteenth is not just a celebration; it's a reminder of how far we've come and the work that still lies ahead.

Do We Practice Being Poor?

EDITORIAL

A while back, an old friend posed a thought-provoking question: “Why do we always practice being poor?” At first, I thought it was rhetorical, but it stayed with me. Initially, I believed you can't practice being poor because poverty isn't a personal choice—it's a condition often thrust upon people due to systemic issues. However, the question made me reflect deeper on the societal and cultural factors that influence our perceptions and behaviors. Are we unconsciously conditioned to accept a scarcity mindset? This article explores the complexities behind poverty, examining whether our actions and attitudes perpetuate a cycle that makes poverty seem inevitable, and how we might break free from this mindset.

Women of Waste (WOW): IMPACT OUR ENVIRONMENT

EDITORIAL

After delving into the waste management industry, we discovered that women make up only about 17% of the workforce. In contrast, women represented approximately 58.5% of the overall labor force in 2022. This stark discrepancy raises questions: Is this imbalance by choice? Or are there underlying factors and barriers that prevent women from entering and advancing in this industry? This article examines the gender gap in waste management, exploring the reasons behind such low female representation. We'll look at societal perceptions, industry practices, and potential solutions to create a more inclusive and equitable work environment for women in waste management, aiming to understand if and how this imbalance can be addressed.
